ECO-TOURISM
Eco-friendliness is something that we take very seriously. Being dedicated conservationists, we have developped this resort to have minimum impact on the surrounding environment. We also work closely with local guides and nature reserves to ensure that the activities wey offer to our guests benefit the local economy and contribute to important conservation efforts.

The Roots has contacts with local guides and tour operators who can offer some of the following exciting activities:

GUA TEMPURUNG CAVES: This cave system makes for a unique and interesting day trip. A variety of tours are available from a simple walk through the cave's cathedral-like chambers to a 'wet tour' through the underground river system beneath the cave.

KUALA GULA MANGROVES: Designated as a 'Bird Sanctuary', Kuala Gula is a great day out for any nature enthusiast. Endangered species such as the Milky Stork and the Lesser Adjutant are breeding in the area. Guests will also visit a charcoal kiln and learn about how the villagers here rely on the mangrove in so many ways. An important re-plantation project is underway here to restore an area of mangrove which was levelled for agriculture. This initiative was pioneered by a handful of local villagers and is a great activity for school groups to get involved in.

IPOH HERITAGE TOUR: What better way to explore a city with a rich colonial history than with a local guide. Discover ageing shop-houses, bustling markets and indulge in some of Malaysia's finest national dishes from the myriad hawker stalls.

HISTORY OF PERAK: For a broader image of Perak's history, guests can visit a dis-used tin mine where they will learn about one of Malaysia's most important colonial industries. The abandoned Kellie's Castle is a great place to ponder the grandeur of a past empire as you wander through the deserted hallways and bed chambers of an ill-fated british plantation owner.

ORANG ASLI TRIBES: Take a bike ride or stroll through lush countryside behind The Roots and you will encounter some fantastic scenery. Following the trail which runs alongside the Kinta River you will eventually arrive at a traditional village belonging to the indigenous Orang Asli tribe. Prior permission from the village elders is required to visit this place, tucked away in the Kinta Hills.

HORSE RIDING: Horse treks can be arranged to explore the oil palm plantations and forest trails which lead up into the Kinta Hills behind the resort.

WHITE WATER RAFTING & ROCK CLIMBING: Perak's combination of limestrone cliffs and bubbling rivers makes it a great destination for the more adventurous travellers. A range of outdoor adventure sports are available with difficulty gradings to suit all levels.

PULAU PANGKOR: Take a drive over to the coast of Perak and catch a ferry to the tropical island of Pulau Pangkor. Here guests can relax on the white sand beaches and experience the laid back island vibe.

BIRD WATCHING: Just 2Km from Batu Gajah, near The Roots, sits one of the largest and most important breeding grounds for herons in Peninsula Malaysia. The Kinta Nature Park also houses a breeding population of the threatened Straw-Headed Bulbul.
